ESPHome Device Builder gives AI assistants a direct way to create and configure devices, then build and install their firmware. Its twenty tools include finding components and documentation, reading and changing configurations, checking the result and managing device automations.
J. Nick Koston connects the dashboard through Model Context Protocol, a common interface for AI tools. Long firmware jobs start separately so an assistant can check their progress or cancel them without keeping one request open.
The connection includes access to sensitive configuration: an assistant can read the secrets file. Changes to an individual secret use a dedicated action, while replacing the whole secrets file is blocked. Validation and build output conceal values marked as secrets.
