Makers moving an existing ESPHome device from password-protected updates to encryption need to keep the current update password in its configuration while first installing 2026.9.0. Removing it before that installation makes the update fail.
J. Nick Koston makes that sequence explicit in the release checklist and firmware-update guide, which previously did not clearly state that the password must stay for the first installation.
