Home Assistant changes backup restoration so it can read the archive’s contents in place instead of first unpacking the entire outer archive beside the backup. That removes a temporary disk-space requirement even when restoring only one app or folder, and avoids writing and rereading the whole backup through a network share.
Stefan Agner applies the approach in Supervisor alongside Erik Montnemery’s work in Core. Supervisor also checks that a Home Assistant archive is present before stopping Core for its restore, so a missing archive fails earlier.
