ESPHome lets an LD2450 presence sensor follow an irregularly shaped part of a room, such as a seating or desk area, instead of limiting each zone to a rectangle. The device evaluates the polygon itself and sends a presence change to Home Assistant when it happens.

The calculations run at the radar’s ten updates per second. Compared with calculating zones in Home Assistant from the usual once-a-second position reports, this avoids roughly nine-tenths of a second of added detection delay without sending every position update across the network.

Fabio Pugliese Ornellas tested the feature for several days on hardware using his companion dashboard card to draw the zones. Each zone exposes its outline and an occupied-or-empty reading; the drawing card is a separate project.
