ESPHome adds USB audio for makers who want to connect an off-the-shelf microphone, sound card or speakerphone to an ESP32 with USB host hardware. Separate microphone and speaker components capture sound and play audio, including through ESPHome’s existing speaker media player.
Devices can be connected and removed while the system runs. Each stream uses a chosen audio format; unsupported formats are reported in the logs. Volume and mute commands reach the audio device when it provides those controls.
Related work adjusts how the ESP32-S2 and S3 share their USB buffers, making room for a microphone and speaker together. The connection requires an ESP32 variant with USB host support.
