ESPHome adds cellular networking for ESP32 devices connected to a compatible modem over a serial cable. Makers can use its normal API, MQTT messaging and firmware-update services over the mobile data connection where Wi-Fi or Ethernet is unavailable.
Olivier ARCHER supplies support for SIMCom, Quectel BG96 and generic AT-command modems. The connection keeps modem commands working while data is flowing. An incorrect SIM PIN stops the modem instead of repeatedly trying it and risking a locked SIM.
The first component supplies networking. Satellite positioning, modem power management and signal sensors remain separate work; it cannot be configured alongside ESPHome’s Ethernet component.
