Music Assistant uses the open MusicBrainz catalogue to connect albums and tracks in a library with the same music on other configured services. Links already recorded by MusicBrainz come before a text search; recording identifiers and album barcodes provide another way to find a match.

Marcel van der Veldt applies the matching to new or refreshed library items and gradually works through existing collections in the background. Adding another music service also links items MusicBrainz has already identified. Missing album information can be filled in without replacing details already present.

An advanced setting, enabled by default, controls linking to other music services. Linking an item does not by itself add it to that service’s library.
