ESPHome adds ESP-NOW support to ESP8266 boards, letting makers use the existing direct wireless messaging actions and sensor transport on that chip family. The same component previously supported ESP32 only.
Mathew Winstone supplies the addition in his first contribution to ESPHome. ESP8266 messages remain limited to the older protocol’s smaller payload size, and it cannot distinguish broadcast packets from other received packets. J. Nick Koston reviewed the work.
