Home Assistant expands child-device support to MQTT and supported multi-part Z-Wave devices, so a power strip’s outlets or an energy meter’s clamps can appear as distinct parts of the physical device. MQTT publishers can describe those parts in discovery messages or YAML, while Z-Wave uses explicit labels and groups in its device database.

For example, an Aeotec ZWA046 meter becomes a main device with three clamp children, keeping its aggregate readings on the main device. Existing Z-Wave entity IDs stay the same, and automations targeting the main device still reach its children. Display names change to follow the child device.

The Z-Wave change also removes a redundant slat-cover entity on the Fibaro FGR223 and Shelly Qubino Wave Shutter; owners who explicitly enabled it lose that extra entity. A related registry change preserves a main entity’s room placement when it moves to a child device.
