ESPHome’s online image component accepts progressive JPEGs, including the format commonly served by Immich previews. It previously rejected these files outright, leaving makers unable to display them without converting the image first.
Remco van Essen adds decoding across the existing image sizes and pixel formats. A progressive picture is drawn after its final scan arrives, rather than appearing in successive passes.
These images need extra memory. ESP32 devices use external RAM first, and showing a large image at a smaller size reduces the requirement. If the full decoding buffer does not fit, the component falls back to a blockier image.
